Bingo Origins

Bingo has been documented since the 15th century. Bingo has been connected with the unification of Italy in 1530. Presently, the government still profits from the National Lottery system born over 5 centuries ago.

Bingo was believed to have been developed by the French. The French called Bingo “Le Lotto.” Vertical and horizontal lines form the card used in playing bingo. Winners are declared when these lines or rows are covered or drawn.

Bingo expanded in Europe in little time. Germans used bingo as an educational tool. Some toys and educational materials were patterned from the structure of the bingo card. The rules of playing bingo evolved through the years. Today, there are many variations of bingo available for play.

Modern Developements

In 1929, Edwin Lowe developed bingo to what we know it is now. He patterned it with the game Beano. In Beano, a line has to be filled or formed and the player had to shout Beano. Lowe wanted to join in the game but Beano was very popular and many people are playing it. And that was the birth of the modern Bingo.

Lowe introduced bingo in the public and it was a breakthrough success. Trade marking was a problem. A lot of people copied bingo and claimed it their own. Lowe charged just a dollar for other manufacturers to use the name bingo. This affordable price led to the fast spread of popularity and interest in bingo.

Bingo was used in fundraising activities. However, in every game, there emerged to be at least ten winners. Lowe realized he had to increase the numbers to use in the bingo cards. A university professor named Carl Leffler rose to the challenge. Leffler developed at least 6,000 bingo cards with different combinations. That increased the fee game per card to as much as $100 per bingo card. Undoubtedly, bingo was the biggest fundraiser event in America for years.

After that event, people sought Lowe to create bingo games for them. Books and literature have been developed about bingo. The prizes in bingo games became higher and higher. Presently, National Bingo games contribute at least $100 million to charity. Bingo was a significant part of American history, together with baseball and basketball.
